Gerard normally has a fairly serious and calm persona, especially when hollows or other spiritual entities are involved, for he has been in to many instances where the actions of the spiritual affected the real world. His naturally calm attitude is used to his advantage in battle, as it becomes easier for him to maintain his composure to stay focused on the situation at hand, and ultimately notice everything around him. As a result, he can quickly adjust to any situation to make keen and thought-out decisions, allowing him to stay steps ahead of his opponents. He has shown to be very carefree and emotionless at times.

As a Templar his duty is to control and protect all of humanity from spiritual threats of any form, which makes himself and other Templar's appear as saviors and holy warriors, champions of all that is good armed with piety enough to protect the world from the ravages of foul spirits. Like many other Templar's Gerard sees any spiritual being as a threat or at least a possible threat to humanity or the order, and with good reason for Gerard has seen the dark side of the Spiritual world. Like any Templar Gerard has little to no sympathy or mercy for any spiritual being.

Templar are, as said by spiritually aware humans such as quincy, self appointed guardians, law keepers/makers of humanity and have a unshakable faith in their cause to the point of being religious zealots who embraced the destiny of humanity and will destroy any that stands in their way and Gerard is by no means any different.

The treatment is capable of giving any human spiritual awareness to any that survives the treatment, which the current survival rate is around 22.3% making any person that survives even more valuable to the order. Though the survival rate is increasing every year.

The Enlightenment treatments give the human the gift of spiritual awareness, perception, sensing, as well as being immune to the Sekkiseki's own properties. It also allows the humans body to create a variation of Reiatsu that Templar's call Gouki (Spirit) which strengthens the human body and possessing Sekkiseki properties of Negating Reiryoku. Giving the Templar both incredible resistance to Reiatsu but also allowing them to not just destroy it but also find it. The Sekkiseki in their blood itself makes them nearly invisible to all but the strongest Reiatsu sensing abilities.

The holy fire itself becomes stronger when faced with stronger targets, for the larger the Reiatsu the stronger the fire burns.
